Geographic Info. Systems (GIS) can be employed to relate, organize, and analyze roadway and crash data, thereby facilitating crash countermeasure identification and evaluation. GIS cannot, however, replace the role of the local analyst as a problem solver who needs to interpret results and recommend engineering, enforcement, or educ. improvements. Using the PC-based Micro Traffic Records System (MTRS), a software packaged employed in Virginia that records crashes at either a specific intersection or between 2 cross streets, it was possible to place 82% of the MTRS crash locations within a GIS.

In 2003, 42,643 people were killed & more than 2.8 million people were injured in motor vehicle crashes. Efforts to reduce fatalities on the Nation's roadways include the Nat. Highway Trans. Safety Admin.'s (NHTSA) New Car Assessment Program (NCAP). Under this program, NHTSA conducts vehicle crash & rollover tests to encourage manufacturers to make safety improvements to new vehicles & provide the public with information on the relative safety of vehicles. This report examines: how NHTSA's NCAP crash tests vehicles, rates their safety, & reports the results to the public; how NHTSA's program c

Between 1980 & 1992, the annual death toll on America's highways dropped from more than 50,000 to less than 40,000. One factor contributing to the decline may have been the increasing concern among consumers about the safety of the vehicles they purchase. This report reviews the automobile crashworthiness program of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to determine whether NHTSA's crash test programs provide valid & reliable indicators of occupant safety in real-world crashes. Charts & tables.

Each year about 1.3 million people are killed and another 50 million people are injured on roads worldwide. These road crashes cost countries between 1 and 3 percent of their GDP. Many of these crashes can be prevented by effective countermeasures. This report helps identify the most effective safety countermeasures. Policy makers need to justify expenditure on road safety in terms of effectiveness, competing for the scarce resources available. The risk of making poor decisions and the cost of making better decisions can be reduced by the use of reliable studies on how effective safety measure

This comprehensive report on pedestrian safety builds on the current level of knowledge of pedestrian safety countermeasures by identifying the most effective advanced technology and intelligent transportation systems, such as automated pedestrian detection and warning systems (infrastructure-based and vehicle-based), road design, and vehicle structural design improvements, that could potentially mitigate the crash forces on pedestrians in the event of a crash. The report also includes recommendations on how new technological developments could be incorporated into educational and enforcement

Fatalities on U.S. roads now total over 40,000 each year. Future reductions may require the Dept. of Transportation (DoT) to address new trends such as evolving crash-avoidance technologies and rapidly changing electronic devices that may distract drivers who use them on the road. This report examines how DoT is addressing fast-moving trends such as these, and examines how DoT is: (1) deciding on responses to the crash avoidance and electronic distractions trends --given available evidence and uncertainties; (2) developing new evidence on these trends' safety impacts; and (3) communicating wit
