This publication analyses available statistics on female genital mutilation/cutting, with the aim of improving understanding of related issues in the wider context of gender equality and social change. The study centres on women aged 15-49 and their daughters, presenting estimates and examining differentials in prevalence, and highlighting patterns within the data that can strategically inform programmatic efforts. It will serve as a companion piece to the November 2005 UNICEF Innocenti Digest on Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting.

Analyzes patterns in the arrest, judicial management, & correctional placement of female offenders. Citing data from diverse sources, females are entering the juvenile justice system more frequently & at younger ages. The relative growth in juvenile arrests involving females was more than double the growth for males between 1989 & 1993. While juvenile arrests for violent crime increased 33% for males during that period, they increased 55% for females. The ratio of male juvenile arrests to female juvenile arrests declined from 8 to 1 in 1989 to 6 to 1 in 1993.

This report details the study of the effects of formamide on male and female rats and mice to identify potential toxic or cancer-related hazards. Analyses the participation of female farmers in the farmer organizations (FO) of minor irrigation systems and identifies factors that hamper the participation of women in decision-making processes with regard to land, cultivation and irrigation. The paper argues that participation does not necessarily result in equity and that other forms of equity interact with gender inequity in the FOs.

Rembrandt’s extraordinary paintings of female nudes—Andromeda, Susanna, Diana and her Nymphs, Danaë, Bathsheba—as well as his etchings of nude women, have fascinated many generations of art lovers and art historians. But they also elicited vehement criticism when first shown, described as against-the-grain, anticlassical—even ugly and unpleasant. However, Rembrandt chose conventional subjects, kept close to time-honored pictorial schemes, and was well aware of the high prestige accorded to the depiction of the naked female body. Why, then, do these works deviate so radically from the

Alina Reyes agreed to appear totally in the nude for this book in which she completely opens up and focuses on the beauty of the human body as well as the background to female nudity in mythology, history and make-believe since the dawning of humanity. Perfect models all with piercing looks posed for Bernard Matussiere. Without going too far, his black and white photos reveal the eternal feminine, the distinct traits of nudity, and the unique beauty and poetry contained in the fragile nature of the human body.
